Esther Virginia Clevenger, 86, of Newberne Road, (Tanner Community), Gilmer County, W.Va., departed this life on April 17, 2014, in the Hospice Care Regional Inpatient Center, Elkins, W.Va., following a short illness.
Born Aug. 11, 1927, in Gilmer County, she was the daughter of the late Florice K. and Nellie Maude Goff Hinzman.
Esther graduated from Tanner High School in 1945 and was a 1949 graduate of Glenville State College. She taught school for 30 years, mostly in Ohio, and returned to Gilmer County to live following retirement. She was an active member of Newberne United Methodist Church, serving as president of the Women's Group and as Church Treasurer for many years. She was a life member of the Glenville State College Alumni Association, Tanner High School Alumni Association, lifetime member of the Ohio Retired Teachers Association, and also a member of the Christlieb, Christlip, Crislip Family Association.
On June 1, 1949, she was united in marriage to Ruble Clevenger, who preceded her in death on July 29, 1988.
Surviving is one sister, Ruby Frymier of Tanner, W.Va.
Along with her husband and parents, Esther was preceded in death by one brother, Leo Paige Hinzman; and two sisters, Grace Wells and Gladys Woodford.
Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Ellyson Mortuary Inc., 2 Vanhorn Drive, Glenville, W.Va., with Pastor Eddie Balis and Chaplain Bryon Bukovesky officiating. Burial will follow in Horn Creek Baptist Church Cemetery. Friends may call from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. Monday at the mortuary.
