The Speedway at 1400 Seventh St. in Parkersburg was the site of an armed robbery early Wednesday morning.
The clerk reported the suspect entered the store and remained in one location until she returned to the register. There the suspect drew a black pistol and pointed it at the clerk, demanding cash from the register.
The clerk complied, and the man left with an undisclosed amount of money, fleeing on foot in an easterly direction, according to the release.
Martin said cooperating with the armed suspect was the right thing to do.
"A few hundred dollars isn't worth risking injury or possibly even death," he said.
Police provided a surveillance camera image of the suspect, and Martin said officers were looking for other surveillance systems in the area in the hope that an image was captured of the man without his mask.
As they continue to investigate, the chief asked the public to contact the department with any information they might have on the case.
"We're hoping that the public can generate us some leads as far as the suspect goes," he said.
That information can be provided by contacting the department's Detective Bureau at 304-424-8444 or leaving an anonymous tip online at parkersburgpolice.com.
A Speedway spokeswoman said the company is cooperating with police.
