Parkersburg News and Sentinel

Mildred Cowan, 97, passed away March 24, 2014, at Georgetown, Texas.

Prior to moving to Texas in 2007 she resided in Vienna for 87 years.

Mildred was born near Spencer in Roane County, on May 7, 1916, the daughter of the late Fred and Glenna Keffer Davis.

The family moved to Vienna in 1922 and resided there throughout their lives, spending many winters at their homes in Bradenton, Fla.. Mildred attended schools in Vienna and Williamstown High School and The Mountain State Business College. In 1934 she married Gilbert R. Hiehle and they had two children. The marriage ended in 1941. In 1949, Mildred married Harold Paul Cowan, who died in 1999. For much of her life she was a homemaker, and worked at several retail stores in Parkersburg and Vienna, and for a time at the Internal Revenue Service office. She was especially proud of working with many local women at the Baldwin factory (later O Ames), assembling components for WWII military hardware.

Mildred was a member of St. Johns United Methodist Church in Vienna for more than 50 years. She was deeply appreciative of the many friends and neighbors who cared for and blessed her in so many ways during her long life, and she missed them greatly after moving to Texas for reasons of declining health.

She was preceded in death by her parents and two siblings, Marjorie Davis and James Ray Davis and her husband.

She is survived by two children, Roberta Sue Arendas of Georgetown, Texas and Jack G. Hiehle of Denver, Colorado; five granddaughters and six great-grandchildren.

Mildred was interred in the Lubeck Cemetery. A memorial service will be held at St. Johns United Methodist Church, Grand Central Avenue, Vienna at 1 p.m.. March 28, with Rev. Norman Butler officiating.

Memorial gifts may be made to St. Johns United Methodist Church.
