PARKERSBURG - The search for a new Wood County Schools superintendent has begun, and school board members hope to have a new hire announced early next month.
Howard O'Cull, president of the West Virginia School Board Association, spoke Tuesday to the Wood County Board of Education, with members hammering out a timeline for the search process.
O'Cull said the position, which is being vacated by Superintendent Pat Law at the end of June, has been posted. The application deadline is March 19.

Howard O’Cull, president of the West Virginia School Board Association, speaks Tuesday to the Wood County Board of Education, with members hammering out a timeline for hiring a new superintendent. The board hopes to have its selection announced April 8.
"On March 20 those will be forwarded to the school board for review and consideration," O'Cull said.
School board members agreed to hold a special meeting March 25 to screen applicants. The process will be conducted in an executive session, but board President Tim Yeater said members would return to open session to announce a list of finalists for the position.
Those finalists will meet the public on March 29 during a public forum. Officials are still determining the location of the forum and how questions will be submitted.
A Glance at the Search
* March 19 - Application deadline.
* March 25 - Wood County Board of Education executive session to screen applications. Finalists will be announced.
* March 29 - Public forum from 10 a.m. to noon with candidates. Location to be announced.
* April 1 - School board meeting and public discussion.
* April 7 - School board meets to make final selection.
* April 8 - School board announces new superintendent.
O'Cull said many school boards use a combination of public submitted questions and prepared questions to present to candidates.
The school board also will hold a meeting April 1 to meet with community members and groups, such as teacher and service personnel unions, to have public discussion on the qualities needed in a new superintendent. Though the board plans to make a final selection April 7, Yeater said a formal announcement would not be made until April 8.
O'Cull said the process being used now closely mirrors the one used by the board in 2010 when it hired Law. At the end of last year Law announced he would retire when his contract ends July 1.
