Russell Wayne Barrett

Russell Wayne Barrett, 74, of Florence, went to be with his Heavenly Father on March 10, 2014, at McLeod Hospice House, following a three week illness and hospitalization.

Russ Barrett was born on Aug. 6, 1939, in Parkersburg, the youngest child of Delbert Hall Barrett and Bess Mae (Hiley) Barrett.

He was raised in Parkersburg, and attended Parkersburg High School where he played the cornet in the marching band to become a 1957 graduate.

After high school, he attended Marietta College in Marietta, Ohio, to receive his Bachelor of Arts degree in June 1964.

Russ went to work at E. I. DuPont deNemours Company at Washington, W.Va., in May 1959, as a computer programmer/operator, and later as a systems analyst, data processing manager, cost accounting supervisor and business specialist.

He married Miss Linda Lee (Law) in Parkersburg, in the First Baptist Church, on Oct. 30, 1960, and enjoyed 53 years of marriage together. Russ was Baptized in this same church on March 26, 1961.

In addition to his well beloved wife, he is survived by three beloved children, Dr. Michael Wayne Barrett and wife Valorie Florence Wainscott Kern of Florence, S.C., Joyce Ann (Barrett) Waggoner and husband William Alan Waggoner of N. Charleston, S.C., and Susan Lynn (Barrett) Harman and husband Robert Daniel Harman of Key Largo, Fla. He is also survived by his five grandchildren, Scott Michael Barrett, Mikayla Rebecca Barrett, Joshua Aaron Barrett, Melissa Amber Waggoner and Grant Alan Waggoner; and one step-grandson, Dillon Porter Kern. He is survived by an older brother, Edwin Paul Barrett and wife Betty Jean McMillan of Vienna, W.Va., and their four children, David W. Barrett, Laura Merritt, Jennifer Ridenhour and Janet Barrett; an older sister, Doris Jane (Barrett) Bull, widow of Herbert Granville Bull Jr. of Spring, Texas, and her two children, Carol Johnson and Beth Mollison.

He lived in Parkersburg through 1979, and was active in local activities and government. He was a member of the South Parkersburg Jaycees (President 1970-71 and Outstanding Young Man 1971-72), and also served on the Parkersburg City Council for eight years through about 1978, the last four years as president of the Parkersburg City Council for District 3. He and his family also attended and were active members of the Seventh Street UM Church in Parkersburg.

In Aug. 1979, he was transferred with E. I. DuPont to Florence, S.C., where he moved with his wife and three children and attended Ebenezer Baptist Church in Florence. He worked with DuPont for 38 years before retiring in 1998.

After his work with DuPont, he was employed as Director, and later Commissioner, of the Florence County Voter Registration and Election Commission from 1999-2012. Russ was also a Notary Public in South Carolina from 2003-2013.

Russ enjoyed spending time with his family, outdoor and yard activities, working on his 1967 Mustang and in the past, photography, bowling and camping. He was also active in the Republican party.

He will be greatly missed by his family, friends and many others who have had the pleasure of knowing and working with him.

Visitation will be 6-8 p.m. today at Layton-Anderson Funeral Home, 4210 W. Palmetto St., Florence, S.C. Interment will be at Mt. Hope Cemetery in Florence, S.C.
