Charles ‘Willie’ Hendershot

Charles W. Hendershot, 89, formerly of Vienna, passed away March, 9, 2014, at Cedar Grove Assisted Living.

He was born Oct. 11, 1924, in Parkersburg, a son of the late Ora Hendershot and Jessie B. Riddle Hendershot Phillips.

Charles had proudly served his country in the Marines during World War II and was awarded the Purple Heart. He began working for DuPont Washington Works in 1948 and retired after 34 years of service with the company. He was a member of American Legion Post 15 and Stout Memorial United Methodist Church. He was a avid Mountaineer fan and liked traveling with his wife and friends to the games. He also followed the Parkersburg Big Reds and enjoyed golf. He and his wife spent winters in Ft. Myers, Fla., for many years.

Surviving Charles are his daughter, Pamela (Jerry) O'Brien of Parkersburg; one granddaughter, Kimberly (Dave) Hettinger of Cedar Point, N.C.; three great-grandchildren, David, Matthew and Taylor Hettinger; one step-grandson, Casey O'Brien of Parkersburg; half brother, George Hendershot; sister-in-law, Dean Hendershot; and nephew, Jay Hendershot.

In addition to his parents, Charles was preceded in death by his wife of 44 years, Margaret E. Star Hendershot; two brothers, Paul E. and Donald W. Hendershot; and two stepsons, Michael and Thomas Daugherty.

The funeral service will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Leavitt Funeral Home, Parkersburg, with the Rev. Chrissy Ruehl officiating. Burial will be at Mt. Olivet Cemetery with full military rites by American Legion Post 15. Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. today and for one hour prior to the service on Tuesday.
