Gloria Jean Newlon Lofty departed this life on Feb. 8, 2014, at Eagle Pointe Nursing Home in Parkersburg, W.Va., after a long battle with cancer.
She was born in Parkersburg, a daughter of George Newlon and Bernice (Patterson) Newlon, on March 14, 1941.
When she was 8, her mother passed away and Gloria went to live with her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Harry Newlon of Parkersburg. Gloria lived with them through her high school years. She graduated from Parkersburg High School in 1959 and attended Mountain State College. She worked as an operator for the telephone company until her marriage to Mickey Eugene Lofty in 1964. They had two sons, Michael Philip Lofty and William Joseph (BJ) Lofty. They lived in Parkersburg and Rock Hill, S.C.
Gloria was a lifetime member of Beta Sigma Phi, Chapter Gamma Phi. She was an avid tennis player playing on many leagues at City Park. Gloria was a member of St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church. She owned and operated the Country Junction on Murdoch Avenue for 15 years. She enjoyed her shop immensely until health issues caused her to retire. She loved craft making and was very talented.
She is survived by her husband, Mickey Eugene Lofty of 50 years; grandaughters, Amber Lofty of Morgantown and Hannah Lofty of Cape Hatteras, N.C.; a grandson, Gerad of Williamstown; a brother, Edward Michael of Marietta, Ohio, and his family; Phil and Becky Lofty, brother and sister-in-law; nieces, Stephanie Lofty Durnell (Jim) of Huntington and Stacy Lofty Dewees (Phil) of Orlando, Fla.; lifelong childhood friend, Nancy Brady Smith of St. Port Lucie, Fla.; and her friend. Barbara Leon Smith Dillener.
She was preceded in death in 2012 by both sons.
There will be no services. Leavitt Funeral Home, Parkersburg, is assisting the famiy with cremation arrangements. Burial will be at Mt. Carmel Cemetery in Parkersburg at the convenience of the family.
Memorial contributions may be made in Gloria's name to St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church or to the Parkersburg Humane Shelter.
