Mary Kathleen "Kate" Alkire Brooks, 92, Sissonville, died Jan. 19, 2014, at the Wyngate Senior Living Center in Vienna.
Kate was born on Feb. 27, 1921, in Braxton County, W.Va., the oldest child of the late Ernest and Myrtle Alkire.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 68 years, Arlo Paul Brooks Sr.; brothers, William, Dale, Gale and Kenneth; and sisters, Maxine Adkins and Rose Sergent Ashley.
Shortly after being wed, Kate and Paul moved to the Sissonville area where they lived for 60-plus years, and actively participated in church and community activities. Kate was a charter member of Aldersgate United Methodist Church, serving and participating in many roles throughout the years including Sunday School teacher, United Methodist Women member, Chancel Choir singer, Worship Committee Chair, Building Committee member and church historian.
Kate's involvement in the community was extensive. With other mothers, she helped implement a hot lunch program at Buena Vista Elementary School in the late 1940s, converting a cloak room into a kitchen. Other endeavors included being a Cub Scout den mother, raising money for multiple charities and cooking for the Sissonville Lions Club, to name a few. She served as assistant postmaster at the Sissonville Post Office in the early 1950s. Kate also was a member of both the Sissonville Woman's Club and the General Federation of Women's Clubs.
Kate is survived by her three children, Dr. A. Paul Brooks (Nancy) of Vienna, W.Va., David (Kathryn) of Swansboro, N.C., and Mary Elisabeth Cagna (Robert) of South Charleston, W.Va.; eight grandchildren, Belinda Brooks (Ken) Armstrong, Rebecca Brooks Smith, Dr. Gregory (Janet) Brooks, Dr. Douglas Brooks, Todd (Tammy) Brooks, Amy Brooks Somers, Bryan Whitley and Brooke Whitley; 15 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Service to honor the life of Mary Kathleen "Kate" Brooks will be held 11 a.m. Thursday at Aldersgate United Methodist Church, 6823 Sissonville Drive, Sissonville, with the Rev. Noble Miller Jr. officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service. Burial will be in Floral Hills Cemetery, Sissonville.
The family would like to thank special neighbors Peggy Peters, Pete Saunders, and Jimmy and Ann Adkins, and the Aldersgate United Methodist Church family for all the kindness and helpfulness shown to our mom over the past several years, and also the staff at Wyngate Senior Living Community, Vienna, for all the caring and compassion they have shown over the past several months to "Miss Kate".
