Darris E. Atkinson

Darris Edward Atkinson, 85, of Spencer, W.Va., died Jan. 13, 2014, at Charleston Area Medical Center's General Division.

Darris was born Nov. 24, 1928, in Reedy, W.Va., a son of the late Ralph G. and Gladys Ashley Atkinson.

He was retired from Kaiser Aluminum and enjoyed woodworking, farming, camping and fishing. He was a member of Clarence Community Church and attended Faith Baptist Church. Darris was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War.

He is survived by his wife, Georgia Butler Atkinson; four daughters, Diane (David) Kyer of Spencer, Darlene Atkinson of Ripley, W.Va., Gloria Kay (Paul) Vannoy of Reedy and Linda Luthy of St. Albans, W.Va.; two sons, Eddie (Michelle) Atkinson of Parkersburg and David Michael (Teonna) Atkinson of Ravenswood; three sisters, Betty Boggs of Charlotte, N.C., Doris Jean Cline of Spencer and Sharon Wine of Reedy; 15 grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Delmar Atkinson.

Service will be 1 p.m. Friday at Taylor-Vandale Funeral Home, Spencer, with the Rev. Wayne McGlothlin officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Zion Cemetery. Visiting hours will be 6-8 p.m Thursday at the funeral home. Local Roane County veterans will be conducting the military portions of the service at the funeral home and cemetery.
