Willard Homer Byrd

Willard Homer Byrd, 90, of Harrisville, W.Va., formerly of Smithville, W.Va., departed this life on Saturday, Jan. 11, 2014, at Camden Clark Medical Center, Memorial Campus, Parkersburg.

He was the last surviving child of the late Jesse Lane and Thessa Gragg Byrd Newlon.

Willard was a self-employed timber man, who along with two of his brothers, Mac and Dude Byrd, owned and operated the Byrd Brothers Inc. for many years. He was a United States Army veteran, having served in World War II, and was a lifetime member of American Legion Post #15, Parkersburg. He was an avid hunter, gardener and timber man.

He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Bernice Martin Byrd; daughters, Jackie Byrd Prim (Charlie), Harrisville, W.Va., and Melanie Byrd (Butch), Alabama; son, Robert Willard Byrd (Venus), Smithville, W.Va.; grandchildren, Shelli Prim Stinespring (Mike), Crystal Byrd Winland (Anthony) and Robert Byrd II (Rebecca); and great-grandchildren, Robert Byrd III, Hayden Byrd, Morgan Byrd, Charley Stinespring, Leo Stinespring, Zoey Winland and Kaige Winland. In addition to his parents, Willard was preceded in death by three sisters, Mary, Otha and Dolly; six brothers, Burlen, Glenmer, Jesse Jr., James, Shirley and Franklin; and several nieces and nephews.

A Celebration of Life will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 18, at The Burnt House Community Building, with Pastor Mary Ann Mason officiating. Interment will follow in the New Mt. Olive Cemetery, Burnt House.
