Mary Jo Gustke, 85, a member of the Parkersburg community her entire life, left this world on Dec. 29, 2013.
She was the wife of the late Honorable Arthur N. Gustke and the beloved mother of David (Rhonda), James and Beth.
After years of defying the odds and surprising doctors, she peacefully succumbed to her chronic lung condition with her children and faithful canine companion, Abby, at her side. The family would like to express gratitude to Amedisys Hospice for their compassionate care during her final months.
Mary Jo was born May 25,1928, in Parkersburg, to the late Floyd and Mary (Shore) Radcliffe.
In addition to her children, she is survived by her brother, Jack Radcliffe of Huntington; sister-in-law, Ruth Gustke of Parkersburg; and brothers-in-law, Dr. Robert F. Gustke of Vienna, Paul Gustke (Mary Ruth) of Dayton, Ohio, and George Gustke of Oklahoma City. Mary Jo was close to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, Bryan Gustke, Anna (Dustin) Anthony, Kristin Gustke, Justice Anthony, McKinzie Anthony, Logan Gustke, Alexis Gustke, Landon Anthony, Peyton Gustke and Kasyn Anthony; and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, the Honorable Arthur N. Gustke; one sister, Elma Lake; one brother, Floyd Radcliffe Jr.; and daughter-in-law, Cynthia Santoro Gustke.
Mary Jo worked for her brother-in-law, Dr. Robert F. Gustke, for more than 25 years. She was active in many local organizations, including the Junior League of Parkersburg and the PHS Class of 1946 reunion committee. She was an avid golfer in her early years, and enjoyed attending PHS and WVU football games.
Contributions may be made in Mary Jo's memory to the Parkersburg High School Stadium Fund.
A memorial service will be held Saturday at Leavitt Funeral Home, Parkersburg, beginning at 11 a.m., with Pastor Bill Thomas officiating. The family will receive visitors one hour prior to the service. At Mary Jo's request, a private family commitment will be held at Mt. Olivet Cemetery following the service.
