ST. MARYS - Jody Murphy has been named executive director of the Pleasants Area Chamber of Commerce.
Murphy, a former reporter for The Parkersburg News and Sentinel, was hired by the chamber and the Pleasants County Development Authority. Murphy's role as executive director with the chamber is on a part-time basis. He'll also be working for the development authority as a special projects director to promote the area and assist in the growth and development of new and existing businesses.
"It's exciting to have a role in the grow, development and retention of business and industry in the area," he said.
"Pleasants County is a great place to play, live and, of course, work."
His primary goal over the next few weeks is re-energize the chamber and its members.
"I want members to be excited about what's happening and eager to see what's next," he said. "A successful, vibrant and healthy chamber of commerce is vital to solid business community.
"The next 365 days are going to see upward growth for the chamber," he added. "Members are going to see a huge return on their investment."
Murphy's wife Veronica (Poynter) is a St. Marys native. The couple has three children all boys and is excited to move into the county.
"For years I have listened to my father-in-law, Leo Poynter, brag about Pleasants County. He's very proud of this place; where he grew up and raised a family and continues to live. Over the past 12 years that we've lived in the area and I have covered the county, I understand where he's coming from. I am excited to be part of this."
