WHEELING - The Parkersburg girls ruled the free-throw line, but Wheeling Park had the final say on the scoreboard after defeating the Big Reds 58-51 on Wednesday night.
Wheeling Park limited PHS (1-1) to 11 made field goals, but the Big Reds made 24-of-36 from the charity stripe.
A total of three players scored in double figures for PHS, including Nicole Dent with a team-high 16 points. Teammates Haley Ackerman and Kameron Synder contributed 12 and 10 points, respectively.
Wheeling Park's Kendra Johnson led all scorers with 18 points. Kelsi Johnson pitched in 14 points for the 2-0 Patriots.
In the junior varsity game, Tia Opel's buzzer beater from short range lifted PHS past Wheeling Park, 52-50.
Ritchie County 59,
Doddridge County 54
ELLENBORO -Two buckets in the final 30 seconds of regulation enabled Ritchie County to send its game with Doddridge County into overtime and and eventually led to a Rebels 59-54 victory on Wednesday night.
The Rebels scored the final five points in the extra session and secured their third win in four games.
Vanessa Toman led Ritchie County with 15 points, while Stephanie Kirk tossed in 10 points.
Doddridge County slipped to 0-2 despite 19 points from Haley Stephenson.
St. Marys 80, Wirt County 75
ELIZABETH - The free-throw line was Wirt County's worst enemy as St. Marys converted 27-of-40 from the charity stripe in an 80-75 victory over the Tigers on Wednesday night.
Wirt County trailed by just two points at halftime, but St. Marys outscored the Tigers 20-10 in the third quarter to take a 56-44 advantage. Wirt County whittled the deficit to as few as four points in the fourth quarter, but the Blue Devils made their free throws when it counted.
Colby Brode led St. Marys (1-0) with 18 points, while Jessy Moore accounted for 17 points.
For Wirt County (0-1), Kalob Bell made two 3-pointers and scored a game-high 26 points.
Gilmer County 60,
Roane County 58
GLENVILLE - Austin Cunningham's 25-foot jumper as time expired in the fourth quarter lifted Gilmer County past Roane County 60-58 on Wednesday night.
The Titans trailed 42-37 entering the final eight minutes.
Austin Ratliff led Gilmer (1-0) with 12 points, while Austim Cunningham added 17 points.
Jacob Neal led Roane County (0-1) with 16 points.
Ritchie County 57,
Calhoun County 54
MT. ZION - Ritchie County erased a seven-point deficit starting the fourth quarter and rallied to defeat Calhoun County 57-54 on Wednesday night.
Seth Cottrill paced Ritchie (1-0) with 19 points, while A.J. Collins finished with 14 points. Ryan Slider and Tyler Sims each poured in 18 points for Calhoun (0-1).
Clay County 57,
South Harrison 55
CLAY - Jarrod Woodyard's 12-foot jumper from the left baseline with four seconds remaining in regulation proved to be the gamewinner as Clay County defeated South Harrison 57-55 on Wednesday night.
Chris Cole led Clay County (1-0) with 15 points, while teammates Storm Carver and Stephen Cole each tossed in 14 points.
