Carl Johnson Varney Sr., 87, of Ravenswood, W.Va., went to be with the Lord on Nov. 8, 2013, at Ravenswood Care Center, Ravenswood, following an extended illness.
He was born Dec. 19, 1925, in Crum, Wayne County, W.Va., a son of the late Thomas and Ruth (Prince) Varney. His brothers, Oscar, Robert, William and Homer Varney; and sister, Ruby Koontz, also preceded him in death.
He was a retired slitter operator in the finishing department from Kaiser Aluminum and Chemical Corporation, and a member of United Steelworkers Local 5668. He served in the United States Army during World War II in the European theatre and was a Purple Heart recipient. He attended First Baptist Church, Ravenswood, and was 50-year member of Jewell Lodge 140 AF&AM, Crum, W.Va. He enjoyed gardening and carpentry work, and loved spending time with his grandchildren.
Survivors include his wife, Dorothy (Shannon) Varney; son, Carl J. Varney Jr. and his wife, Michelle, of Vienna; daughters, Venisa Flesher and her husband, Jeff, Gloria Ann Blackhurst and Connie Reynolds and her husband, Earl Lee, all of Ravenswood; grandchildren, Steven and Craig Blackhurst, Terra and Sara Varney and Anna and Nathanael Flesher; five great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
Service will be 7 p.m. Monday at Casto Funeral Home Chapel, Ravenswood, W.Va., with Pastor Mark Gerstell officiating. Graveside service will be 11 a.m. Tuesday in Ravenswood Cemetery, Ravenswood, W.Va., with full military honors by VFW Post 6669, Ravenswood. Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
