George Harold Hawes, 89, of Parkersburg, died on Monday, Oct. 21, 2013, at his home.
He was born Aug. 19, 1924 in Wheeling, W.Va., to the late Charles and Sarah (Pinson) Hawes.
George was a veteran of the U.S. Army who served in the European Theater with the 281st Field Artillery Battalion. He retired from the Parkersburg News and Sentinel, where he worked in advertising/sales for over 10 years. George was a member of the Elks Lodge198, where he was a Past Exalted Ruler, the American Legion Post #15, Ben Bey Grotto and Mt. Olivet Lodge #3. He was a member of Stout Memorial United Methodist Church.
He is survived by one daughter, Judy Hawes (Art Klass) of Parkersburg; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Virginia Hawes; two brothers; and four sisters.
Memorial contributions may be made in George's memory to the Parkersburg Humane Society.
The funeral service will be Friday, Oct. 25, beginning at 1 p.m. at Leavitt Funeral Home, Parkersburg, with Dr. Paul Russell officiating. Burial will follow the service at Mt. Olivet Cemetery. Visitation will be Thursday, Oct. 24, from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home.
