Mary Maxine McPeek, 93, of Belpre, passed away Oct. 19, 2013, at the Parkersburg Care Center.
She was born July 30, 1920 in Belleville, W.Va., one of 10 children of the late Elbert L. and Myrtle S. Burdett Hale.
She had worked for The American Viscose Co. from 1936 to 1940. Mary and her husband Harley purchased a grocery store and service station (McPeek's Sunoco) in Belpre, which was operated as a family business, later expanding with two more locations, Vienna and Parkersburg. They also operated the Western Auto Store and McPeek auto Parts in Belpre from 1962 until their retirement in 1985. She had been a faithful Christian since early childhood and a charter member of the Grace Gospel Church, where she had served as Head of the Children's Nursery for many years. She was a member of the Gideon's Ladies Auxiliary and served with the Child Evangelism Fellowship for 20 years.
Mary is survived by three sons, Harley I. McPeek, Jr. and Sandy of Slidell, L.A., David James McPeek and Linda of Reno, Nev., and Harold Robert McPeek and Sue of Fairfield, Ohio; daughter, Janice E. Gorrell and Todd of Parkersburg; grandchildren, Tiffany Davis and Bob, Aaron McPeek, Chad Sloan and Heather, Theresa Piron and Chris, Christopher McPeek and Katie, Elliott McPeek and Ryan McPeek; step-grandchildren, Jennifer Smith, Abby Johnson and Eric, and Anna Moeck and Steve; six great-grandchildren; three sisters, Elizabeth Holbert of Rockport, Doris Moyers of Parkersburg, Georgia Wilson of Florida; two brothers, John Hale of Newark, W.Va. and James Hale of Barlow; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, Mary was preceded in death by her husband of 65 years, Harley I. McPeek, Sr.; two sisters, Lillian Gates and Lena Eaton; and two brothers, Walter Hale and Wilson "Pete" Hale.
The funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Leavitt Funeral Home, Parkersburg, with Pastor David Cumpston officiating. Burial will be at Rockland Cemetery, Belpre. Visitation will be from 2-8 p.m. on Tuesday, and from one hour prior to the service on Wednesday.
