Richard (Dick) Stealey

October 20, 2013
Parkersburg News and Sentinel

On Friday, Oct. 18, 2013, Belpre lost a member of its Greatest Generation.

Richard (Dick) Stealey, born on April 6, 1923, was a 1942 graduate of Belpre High School. Dick proudly served in the United States Navy from January 1943 to January 1946. His World War II Pacific Theatre service took him from the frigid waters of the Aleutian Islands to the brutal conquests of the South Pacific. Upon completion of his military service, Dick returned to Belpre, Ohio where he thrived as an operator at Dupont Washington Works.

Dick met and spent 52 years married to the love of his life and Wood County native, Barbara DePue.

Dick was a Daddy not a golfer or hunter; his hobby was his family. Any hours not at work were spent doting on his wife, son, three daughters, and more recently, any one of his 12 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren or his always-faithful Yorkie, Thunder.

We are thankful that so many have been blessed with Dick's kind and gentle compassion. There are countless things about this loving husband and Daddy that will be missed; not the least of which are his smile, laughter and the healing power of his hugs and kisses.

Dick passed away peacefully on a beautiful fall morning at his home surrounded by his wife and three lovely daughters.

Survivors include his wife, Barbara; a son, Richard "Rick" Stealey III of Orlando, Fla.; three daughters, Barbara A. (David) Holbert of Waverly, W.Va., Caroline (Sean) Keefe of Vienna, W.Va., and Susan (Louie) Tomaro of Manhatten Beach, Calif.; grandchildren, Brook Boggs, Richard C. Stealey, RiAnnon Ash, Scott Holbert, Miranda Midcap, Stephen Holbert, Gage Smith, Garett Smith, Ryan Keefe, Seanna VanKirk, Seth Keefe, Micaela Tomaro and Luca Tomaro; and 10 great-grandchildren. Also surviving is a sister-in-law, Kathryn Bennett of Parkersburg. He was preceded in death by his parents; and and infant son, Larry.

Friends may call at the funeral home on Monday from 2-6 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. Services will be on Tuesday at 1 p.m. at the Leavitt Funeral Home, Belpre, with Rev. Jeffery Atwater officiating. Burial will follow in the Rockland Cemetery.

Donation in memory of Dick may be made to the Belpre Congregational Church, 228 Main Street, Belpre, Ohio, or Humane Society of Parkersburg, 530 29th Street, Parkersburg, WV 26101. Richard H. Stealey Jr.

The family wishes to thank Dr. Shah and his staff, The Infusion Center, Camden Clark Oncology Center, the Ohio Home Care and the Amedysis Hospice.

Online condolences may be sent to the family at www.leavittfuneralhome.com

One day your life will flash before your eyes, make sure it's worth watching.
