MINERAL WELLS - Marietta dominated the Wood County Middle School golf championship here Wednesday at Woodridge Golf Club and Tiger eighth-grader Gage Herb fired a 3-over par 74 to win medalist honors.
Marietta, which also landed Austyn Chen (5th, 87), Caleb Scharff (6th, 89) and Heath Hill (tied 7th, 90) on the all-tournament team, posted a winning total of 340. Edison finished runner-up with a 378. Jackson (386), Blennerhassett (390) and Warren (413) rounded out the top five teams.
"I thought I had a pretty good shot," Herb said of winning, despite the fact he had only played one practice round at Woodridge.

Herb, who was even with Parkersburg Catholic's Carson Okraska (tied 3rd, 82) after nine holes with respective 37s, topped runner-up Isaac Prine. Prine, an eighth-grader at Jackson, finished with a 78 and was last year's tournament co-medalist.
"I was able to play pretty conservative on the back nine," said Herb, who had an easy two-putt birdie on No. 18. "I thought Carson and Isaac would be my toughest competition."
Thanks to a birdie on the par 4, 14th, Prine managed to tie Herb with four holes to play. However, Herb had just one bogey the rest of the way and Prine had a pair of bogeys and took a seven on the 18th.
"I putted probably the worst I have all year," Herb admitted. "I couldn't get the speeds (of the greens) down."
Warren's Nick Ward shared third place honors with Okraska. Also finishing in the top 10 to earn all-tournament honors were Edison teammates Zach Redmond (tied 7th, 90) and Chance Shears (9th, 93) and Blennerhassett's Aaron Fetzner (10th, 94).
