PARKERSBURG - Jackson captured all but two championship matches Tuesday afternoon en route to annexing both team titles in the Wood County middle school tennis tournament at the Erickson All-Sports Facility.
Already the regular-season boys and girls team champions, the Generals added the tourney titles to their 2013 resume, totaling 20 points in both the boys and girls divisions.
Blennerhassett was runner-up in the girls final standings with 12 points, followed by Edison with 7 and Marietta with 5 for the top four finishers out of the nine competing teams.
For the boys, Hamilton placed second with 15 points, Blennerhassett third with 5 and Edison fourth with 4.
The No. 1 girls doubles final was a well-contested match, with the Jackson duo of Kate Snider and Lauren Kruger dropping the first set 7-6 on a 7-5 tiebreaker in Edison's favor, but rallying back to claim the final two sets by 6-4 and then 7-6 on another tiebreaker, this time by 7-4 in the Generals' favor, over the Eagle tandem of Sophia Miller and Jordan Mader.
Marietta's Meredith Coil won the No. 1 girls singles crown 6-3, 6-1 over Snider, while Jackson's Shayan Ghodsi took top boys honors at No. 1 singles, although it took three sets to notch a 6-4, 5-7, 6-4 championship victory over Zarion Jones of Hamilton.
But the Wildcats' Jones and Matt Runyon teamed at No. 1 boys doubles to turn the tables on the Generals' tandem of Ghodsi and Andrew Gnegy. Although getting blanked 6-0 in the first set, Jones and Runyon battled back to take the next two sets by 6-3 and 7-5 scores to earn the triumph.
Double winners Tuesday for the girls were Kruger at No. 2 singles and No. 1 doubles, and Jackson's Baraivi Suundrum and Meredith Rogers at No. 3 and 4 singles respectively and combined at No. 2 doubles.
