PARKERSBURG - Junior Matt Powney scored a hat trick with three goals and had two assists to pace Parkersburg High to an 8-1 boys soccer triumph over visiting Capital Tuesday night at Stadium Field.
But Powney had cohorts in the rout of the Cougars by the third-ranked and still unbeaten Big Reds (10-0-2) as junior Tommy Logston contributed two goals and two assists and senior Evan Rhodes finished with a goal and an assist.
PHS head coach Don Fosselman thought when Capital (4-7) tied the score at 1 at 29:58 of the first half, that seemed to get the Big Red booters going, and they tallied the last four goals of the half for a 5-1 lead, then added three more in the second half.
PHS's initial goal came just four minutes into the game as Hunter Hill headed a Logston corner kick into the net.
But after the Cougars' Raymond Kryzack knotted the count at 1, a four-goal Big Red scoring barrage - two each by Powney and Logston - made it 5-1 at intermission.
Then Powney got his third goal at 39:35 to open the second-half scoring before assisting on the final two goals by Tyler Bro and Evan Rhodes.
"I'll tell you what, we put the ball in the back of the net tonight," said Fosselman. "It was like a fast-break basketball game. We were just 'on' tonight.
"They were playing for each other out there tonight, which is huge. They just played so well, they were fun to watch."
The Big Reds are back in action at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at Riverside.
