Irene (Ellis) Carpenter, 87, of Vienna, died on Sept. 15, 2013, at her home.
She was born Dec. 5, 1925, in Boone County, W.Va., to the late Obra and Effie (Ball) Ellis.
Irene was an avid reader. She enjoyed camping at Holly River State Park, hiking, photography, bird watching and traveling. She was very knowledgeable about the outdoors and knew the name of any tree or flower.
She is survived by her husband of 63 years, Fred William Carpenter; one son, Fred W. Carpenter II (Karen) of Monrovia, Md.; one daughter, Karen Skeen (Richard "Rick") of Vienna; five grandchildren, Maggie and Sarah Carpenter, Tracy Brownfield, Holly Yoke (Nathan) and Kelly Skeen; four great-grandchildren, Tyler, Aaron and Zachary Brownfield and Sophie Yoke; three sisters, Betty Baldwin (Gene) of Lake City, Fla., Nelda Craddock of Port Arthur, Texas, and Joyce Noll (Mike) of Chapmanville, W.Va.; and three brothers, Lionel Ellis (Louise) of Valdosta, Ga., Stanley Ellis (Carolyn) of Alcoa, Tenn., and Steven Ellis (Linda) of Michigan.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by three sisters, Nada Craddock, Neva Ellis and Norma Jean Craddock; and two brothers, Leo and Jack Ellis.
Memorial contributions may be made to Housecalls Hospice.
The funeral service will be Wednesday beginning at 1 p.m. with Pastor Bob Holland officiating. Burial will follow the service at Evergreen North Cemetery. Visitation will be Tuesday from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home.
