PARKERSBURG - Scoring a goal in each half and limiting visiting Nitro to just three shots on goal, Parkersburg High blanked the Wildcats 2-0 in girls soccer Thursday evening at Stadium Field.
Notching the goals for the Big Reds, now 5-2-2 on the season, were junior forward Dani McCay, with an assist from sophomore Halie Hill, at the 9:45 mark of the first half, and then soph midfielder Abby Johnson, off an assist from Quinci Taylor, with 20:57 left in the game.
Midway through the first half, PHS started to get its act in gear, after being "a little unfocused to start the game," said Big Red head coach Kristen Schreiber. "We weren't playing our best - touches were off, passes were off. Most of the conversation at halftime was we needed to start getting focused and do the right things. We needed to play our game, and if they did that and took care of business, we'd be all right tonight."

Parkersburg's Lauren Leaman heads the ball following a corner kick against Nitro as teammate Quinci Taylor awaits Thursday at Stadium Field. The Big Reds won, 2-0.
"And the second half was much better," she added.
Especially since PHS did escape the first half with a 1-0 lead, coming on a breakaway feed from Hill to McCay for a goal. Just minutes before, the duo had tried to hook up on the same play twice in a row, but both times the Big Reds were whistled for being offsides.
But the third time was the charm as Hill got the ball ahead to McCay and she booted it into the net with 9:45 left until intermission.

Then in the second half, Taylor found Johnson with an upfield pass and she kicked it past the Nitro goalie for an important two-goal advantage almost halfway through the final 40 minutes of play.
"Next week is a big week for us," said Schreiber, after her three goalies (starter Sunni Terosky with three saves, followed in net by Taylor Beckley and Mallory Craft) combined for a shutout. "We play at Winfield Tuesday, and then have (Parkersburg) South and Wheeling Park here Thursday and Saturday. Those are all going to be really tough games for us, since we're still a very young team."
