PARKERSBURG - Week two of the prep football season finds Parkersburg High School off and Ravenswood playing its opener.
The Red Devils of head coach Mick Price were the only Class AA program in the state not to play last week. Tonight at Flinn Field, RHS will take on a Webster County program that lost 32-28 to Class A Richwood in its season opener.
Wood County fans have a pair of choices to pick from this evening. Magnolia, sporting from a 14-7 loss to Linsly last week, is taking on host Williamstown (1-0). At the Erickson All-Sports Facility the 1-0 Patriots from Parkersburg South will tangle with those Cadets from Linsly. PSHS tailback Brendan Schwendeman surpassed the 400-yard plateau last week, but Linsly held the Blue Eagles to just 83 yards rushing on 32 attempts.
Parkersburg Catholic, off to a 1-0 start after drubbing Buffalo, has the only area Saturday affair. The Crusaders hit the road for a 1:30 p.m. kickoff versus 0-1 Pocahontas County, which dropped a 21-7 decision to Tucker County, a squad which went undefeated in the regular season a year ago.
Two of the biggest early season showdowns will take place far apart. St. Marys (1-0) will be in Elizabeth to face Wirt County (0-1) and Trimble goes to Mason to try and stop Wahama in a Tri-Valley Conference Hocking Division tilt. The Tigers, who beat St. Marys in the regular season last year and then fell to the Blue Devils in the first round of the playoffs, hasn't started 0-2 since 2007. Wahama, the reigning Class A state champions, will try and improve its regular season win streak to 33 games.
Roane County will try to begin the campaign 2-0, but must make the road trip to Ellenboro to face 0-1 Ritchie County. Ripley, which lost to Parkersburg South last week, won't find the going any easier tonight when the Vikings head to Point Pleasant (1-0).
