Hollis R. Curtis, 90, of Parkersburg, passed away Aug. 31, 2013, at Wyngate Senior Living Community in Parkersburg, W.Va.
He was born Dec. 1, 1922 in Huntington, W.Va., the son of the late Hal Curtis and Lillian Curtis.
He worked in the Northwest with the CCC's, a short time in the coal fields of West Virginia, and with the railroads in Jackson, Ohio. His military career, covering 20 years, was spent first in World War II, serving in Australia, Japan and the Philippines. He also served during the Korean Conflict. Peacetime years included two tours in Germany, retiring while stationed at Fort Story in Virginia Beach, Va. After retirement from the military, he served 17 years as a police officer at the Norfolk Naval Base, was a member of the Police Association of Virginia and a life member of the Sewell's Point Lodge No. 28.
He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Gloria Curtis; brother-in-law and sister-in-law; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother and three sisters.
Memorial services will be Saturday, Sept. 7, 11:30 a.m., at Grace Baptist Church in Parkersburg, with Rev. Todd Hill officiating. Burial will be in the Ravenswood Cemetery. No graveside service will be held at the cemetery. Friends may visit the family at the church on Saturday, Sept. 7, from 11-11:30 a.m.
