Mildred Hammons, 94, of St. Marys, W.Va., passed away, Aug. 26, 2013, at the Ohio State University Medical Center in Columbus, Ohio.
She was born March 20, 1919 in Richwood, W.Va., a daughter of the late Bernard P. and Verna Mae Gladwell Barley.
She was a member of the Calcutta United Methodist Church and a member of the United Methodist Women. She was retired from the former Colin Anderson Center in St. Marys, W.Va., and she quilted with the Calcutta Quilting Group. In addition to quilting, her hobbies included gardening and reading.
She is survived by her children, Patty (Jay) Martin of Charlottesville, Va., June (Jim) Wagner of Hagerstown, Md., Barton (Kathy) Hammons of St. Marys, W.Va., Frank (Jean) Hammons of La Crosse, Wis., Margie (Danny) Bowes of La Plata, Md., Brenda (Leo) Poynter of St. Marys, W.Va., and Randy (Darla) Hammons of St. Marys, W.Va., 14 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren, one great-great-granddaughter; one sister, Kitty Sample of Dubois, Pa.; and several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, James R. Hammons; one sister, Marie Rawson; and four brothers, Ralph Barley, Hayden Barley, Alvin Barley and Bernard Barley.
Services will be held Thursday, Aug. 29, at 10 a.m. at the Ingram Funeral Home, St. Marys, W.Va., with Pastor Mark Mayfield officiating. Interment will be in the Skidmore Farm Cemetery, near Webster Springs, W.Va. Friends may call from 6-8 p.m. today, and from 9-10 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
