PARKERSBURG - An evening lightning strike Thursday caused a fire that destroyed a storage building at a Liberty Street residence.
Parkersburg Fire Capt. Jim Tracewell said the fire was contained to the storage building, which was destroyed. He said the damage amounted to about $5,000 for the building.
"We responded with 15 firefighters since it was reported as a structure fire," he said. "When we realized it was a storage building, we only needed nine on the scene."

A lightning strike destroyed this storage building at 2603 Liberty St. in Parkersburg Thursday.
Tracewell said the call came in to the department at 6:08 p.m. The building on the back corner of the lot at 2603 Liberty St. was fully involved when firefighters arrived.
The house is owned by Tom McCrady and was occupied by Jamie Colebach and David Parsons, Tracewell said.
Parsons said he heard a sound like something hit and saw a bright flash. He said he could smell the smoke and he went outside to see if a neighboring house had been hit by lightning.
Parsons said he noticed smoke coming from the roof of the storage building.
"I went back there and when I opened the door all the air going in caused more smoke and flames," he said.
