PARKERSBURG - In an effort to open its doors to the public and let community members know what opportunities are available in the area, the Boys and Girls Club of Parkersburg will host a Back to School program on Thursday.
From 3 to 6 p.m. following the first day of Wood County Schools' classes, the club at 1200 Mary St. will hold the event to include vendors of local organizations and programs, said organizer Beth Middleton.
"There is a larger volume of things going on in the Mid-Ohio Valley that I didn't know about until we started working on this event," said Middleton, a volunteer for the Boys and Girls Club of Parkersburg.
Each group will have a vendor booth set up with information regarding their services, said volunteer Julia Secoy.
"One of the vendors is the Parkersburg-Wood County Public Library, who will be there to talk about the merits of reading and the services available there for free," Secoy said. "A lot of people don't know what is out there for families and children that is either free or low cost."
Middleton and Secoy said the event will highlight the Boys and Girls Club of Parkersburg, for those who do not already attend.
* The Boys and Girls Club of Parkersburg will hold a Back to School program Thursday afternoon to usher in the new year.
* The club, at 1200 Mary St., will host the community fair from 3-6 p.m. to celebrate the end of the first day of the 2013-2014 school year in Wood County.
* Vendors from organizations and groups around the area will be there to let parents and children know of available social opportunities.
"My children go there after school and have for years," Middleton said. "It's a good, clean, safe environment for kids and is very cost effective."
The exhibition will include a ribbon cutting for the Boys and Girls Cub of Parkersburg's latest project a community garden at 4:30 p.m.
"We want people to know they don't have to be members of the Boys and Girls Club to enjoy the garden or this event," Secoy said. "Really, we want to open the doors and let the community know everything that is out there for the kids and families to enjoy."
