John Franklin Cummings Jr., 70, of Ripley passed away Tuesday, July 23, 2013.
He was born Feb. 10, 1943 at Charleston, a son of the late John Franklin and Freda Skeens Cummings. Frank was a veteran of the U.S. Army and served three years in France. He was in the first Paramedic Training Class in West Virginia and worked as a Paramedic at Jackson General Hospital. He retired from the West Virginia Department of Highways and was a member of the Grace Gospel Baptist Church in Ripley.
Frank was well known in the athletic community in Jackson County and was the Founder and Coach for the Jackson County Boxing Club where he trained many Champions in the 1970's and 80's. He coached and mentored many young men with the Ripley Little League and Ripley High School Summer League Baseball Programs. He will be remembered as a coach, fan and supporter in advancing athletics in Jackson County.
He is survived by his wife of 46 years Wanda Southall Cummings; his son John Franklin "Frankie" Cummings III and his wife Tiffany of Ripley; his daughter Teresa Wilson and her husband Ryan of Ripley; a brother Keith Wayne Cummings of Ravenswood; sisters Brenda Joyce Stalnaker of Vienna and Patricia Ann Dotson and her husband Larry of Ripley; his grandchildren John Franklin Cummings IV, Cassidy Laine Cummings and Mercy Mae Wilson. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
Funeral service will be 1 p.m. Sunday, July 28, 3 p.m. at the Waybright Funeral Home, Ripley with Pastor Shannon Skeen officiating. Burial will be in the Fairplain Cemetery near Ripley. Friends may call from 5-8 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.
