PARKERSBURG - Officials say a summer street paving project may begin as early as this week.
Mayor Bob Newell said a paving contract has been awarded to West Virginia Paving, the only bidder on the contract.
Newell said officials had planned to begin last week but several days of wet weather caused the start date to be pushed back.
The intersection at 16th Street and Stephenson Avenue is part of a list of planned paving projects released by the city of Parkersburg.
Crews are expected to begin milling and paving roads later this week. If weather does not permit, the work should begin July 22.
"The weather looks clear from here on out, but that could change," Newell said.
The city requested about $1.25 million in road work, but when the bids came in the cost was "about $1 million, which is what we were budgeting."
Newell said last year actual costs came in below $1 million and allowed officials to add to the list of streets for repaving.
"Last year, due to the weather, we were able to keep paving into November," he said. Asphalt purchased at the end of the season was used for spot repairs through the winter and into spring.
"This is the third year we've done a million dollars in milling and paving," Newell said. "Now we are doing as much in a year as we had done in three years in the past."
The city uses a Micro-PAVER pavement management system, which rates roads by reviewing condition and volume of traffic. Based on those ratings, roads are prioritized for repair during the summer months.
In years past the city allotted funding for road repairs and divided it among the nine council districts, having each Parkersburg City Council member then select streets within their districts for repairs, Newell said.
That system led to issues as it divided the pool of money and relied on personal preference rather than actual road conditions. Use of the Micro-PAVER system also has led to reduced cost as streets can be grouped together for more rapid paving.
An initial list of roads selected for paving was released in early June. Newell said later this summer officials will look at adding roads to that list.
