PARKERBURG - A fund has been established at the Parkersburg Area Community Foundation and Regional Affiliates for a man who loved animals.
The Ed Stephenson Fund for Animals was named after Ed Stephenson and established by family and including longtime friends Brenda Brum and Kevin Whitby. The fund will provide support for animal welfare needs in Wood and Washington counties.
Stephenson was born in 1951 in Levittown, N.Y. He found his way to West Virginia through Salem College and began teaching in schools in Doddridge and Wirt counties.

He then became a Uniserv consultant with the West Virginia Education Association and after retirement began working in a similar capacity with the Ohio Education Association. Stephenson died in February.
"Ed loved boating, travel, food and fun," Brum said. "He had a special love and affection for animals and he was a generous friend. Ed wanted to have an ongoing way to support animals. With a fund through the Community Foundation, we can honor Ed's wishes, and, as Ed's friends, it provides us with an ongoing cause to support in his memory."
Donations to the Ed Stephenson Fund for Animals can be sent to Our Community's Foundation, P.O. Box 1762, Parkersburg, WV 26102.
The foundation is a regional public charity serving 11 counties in West Virginia and Ohio. Last year, it awarded more than $1.5 million in grants to support needs and scholarships for students pursuing post-secondary education.
