PARKERSBURG - As preparations continue for the 2013 Parkersburg Homecoming Festival in August, a number of the activities and programs during the three-day event are already seeking participants.
This year's homecoming will be held Aug. 16-18 along Second Street from Avery Street to Point Park.
Rubber ducks are dropped into the Ohio River as part of the Rubber Ducky Derby.
The 24th annual Rubber Ducky Derby offers the chance to win $5,000 in cash, along with smaller cash prizes ranging from $250 to $1,500. Tickets are on sale for $5 each or five for $20 at United Bank, Community Bank, Par Mar, Foodland and BB&T, Pifer's BP, Superior Toyota-Hyundai and the Neal Street Resale Store.
All proceeds from the derby benefit the festival. The derby will be held on Aug. 18.
Entrants nd applications are being sought for the 2013 Homecoming Queen and Teen pageants, which have an entry deadline of July 15. The two pageants will be held 6 p.m. July 27 at West Virginia University at Parkersburg in the multi-purpose room.
The Miss Parkersburg Homecoming Festival is open to young women ages 16-22 from throughout West Virginia. The entry fee is $130. The winner will receive a $1,200 scholarship and other prizes.
The Miss Parkersburg Homecoming Festival Teen is open to girls ages 13-15 and also is open statewide. The entry fee is $100. The winner will receive a $250 scholarship and other prizes.
LITTLE MISS, MR.
Just prior to the queen and teen pageants, the Little Miss and Mr. Pageant and the Junior Miss Pageant will be held July 26 in the ballroom at the Blennerhassett Hotel.
The Little Miss and Mr. Parkersburg Homecoming Pageant will begin at 6 p.m. for boys and girls ages 4-6 years. The entry deadline is July 22 and the entry fee is $35. For more information, contact Charlotte Nestor at email@example.com.
The Junior Miss Parkersburg Homecoming Pageant will begin 7:30 p.m., after the Little Miss and Mr. Pageant, at the Blennerhassett Hotel. The pageant is for girls ages 8-12.

Homecoming officials are also holding a Pretty Baby Contest for children up to 3-years old on Aug. 17 at Bicentennial Park. The deadline for entry is Aug. 15 and the entry fee is $10. Entries should be mailed to Parkersburg Homecoming Festival, P.O. Box 416, Parkersburg WV 26102.
The Aug. 17 pageant will be divided into four age categories, with 0-5 months and 6-11 months being held at 3 p.m. at Bicentennial Park stage. The age groups 12-24 months and 25-36 months will be at 5 p.m.
Competitors are being sought for the 21st annual Parkersburg Homecoming Chess Tournament, which will begin at 10 a.m. Aug. 18 in the Parkersburg Municipal Building at Second and Market streets.
The tournament is divided into two sections. The non-rated section is open to the general public and is meant for casual players who do not have an official rating. The rated section is for experienced tournament players who are members of the United States Chess Federation.
The entry fee is $15 if post-marked by Aug. 12 for rated players and $20 on the day of the tournament when registration will be 9-9:45 a.m. The non-rated players entry fee is $10. For registration information, email firstname.lastname@example.org.
