James Robert Payne, 87, passed away early June 16, 2013, at Charleston Area Medical Center General Division.
He was born Oct. 24, 1925, and raised in Cairo, W.Va., the son of the late Harry and Mabel Payne.
Bob graduated from Cairo High School in 1943, and Marietta College in 1949. He served three years in the Army before college in the 289th Battalion. He participated in the Battle of the Bulge, earned sergeant's stripes and was awarded the Purple Heart. He married in 1950 after finding employment as a chemist at Union Carbide from which he retired in 1990. Bob was an avid fisherman and hunter, especially deer hunting. He closely followed the Mountaineers football program. He also enjoyed bridge and golf.
He is survived by his son, William H. Payne of Charleston, W.Va.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Betty Kurtz Payne; brother, William B. Payne; sister, Pauline S. Zinn; and son, Brian K. Payne.
As were his wishes, Bob's remains were donated to the WVU Human Gift Registry.
A private graveside service will be held at a later date.
