VIENNA - Vienna fire Chief Steve Scholl said the ice cream social being held at 6 p.m. Friday will be in honor of the late Chief Danny Goodwin. He said residents can expect entertainment, games, prizes and best of all - ice cream.
Goodwin, 67, died on Jan. 14 from respiratory problems. He was a member of the fire department for more than 40 years and had been chief since 1990. His funeral was attended by many members of the Mid-Ohio Valley along with multiple fire departments.
The ice cream social will take place at the Vienna Volunteer Fire Department to offer residents the ability to gather cake or pie and the frozen treat. After filling their plates, residents will go toward Spencer Memorial Park for more food, games and fun.

Scholl said the ice cream social is the only fundraiser the department has all year and is very important to them.
"The money taken in (by the event) is for unfunded mandates," Scholl said. "Meaning items the city doesn't fund for us."
Those items included a brand new rescue fire truck purchased last November. Scholl said hand tools and rescue tools are in the books for the department to purchase with the money from this year's ice cream social.
"Because of the Vienna community we can do it," Scholl said of the social. "It's like our own little homecoming."
People can purchase $2 tickets ahead of time at the fire department or at the door on the night of the event. Ticket holders will get ice cream, homemade cake and pie. The event will feature children's games and entertainment, including three live bands. The children's games will cost 50 cents each and require tickets to play.
The Vienna Volunteer Fire Department Auxiliary chapter will be selling hot dogs, chips, pop and water. Games will be set up in the Vienna Community Building, with tables for tickets at each entrance.
It's not too late to donate baked good items to the fire department. Those items can be dropped off at the fire station or picked up at a residence. Call the VFD for more information at 304-295-5652.
"The city does a good job of taking care of our needs," Scholl said. "This fundraiser just gives us some extra money for other necessities."
