"We hold these truths to be self-evident that all men are created equal and are endowed by our creator with certain unalienable rights that among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness." Said Jefferson: "To secure these rights governments are instituted among men."
Clearly, God and government are joined. This is our moral foundation. Every system of government is based on some kind of moral system. Ours is founded upon "the laws of nature and nature's God."
According to Article 3 of the Northwest Ordinance, the purpose of the public schools is to "teach morals, religion, as well as knowledge." No state was admitted into the union without this plank in it's state constitution.
This tells us two things: the state is accountable and has the responsibility for the education of its people. Nowhere in any document signed by our Founding Fathers was the accountability and responsibility for education given to the federal government. According to Jefferson, the political system and the school system were founded upon "the laws of nature and nature's God." The purpose of government is to secure our rights. The purpose of education is to teach "morals, religion as well as knowledge."
Yet, the state has permitted the federal government to assume accountability and responsibility for education in violation of states' rights and state law. Now, the federal government is removing God from the public school and government. Soon, God will be gone from our pledge, gone from our National Anthem (prayer), gone from our public buildings and public life.
The government, the state, and the school, and the individual is left with no moral compass. Soon, on the Fourth of July, we will not celebrate equality, liberty, equal justice or equal rights. Only the festival will remain. It will continue with pomp and parade, guns and games, bells and bonfires.
The significance of "the laws of nature and nature's God" is now a long time gone.
