Olif M. Nelson, 95, of Parkersburg, passed away Monday, June 3, 2013, at the Camden Clark Medical Center, Memorial Campus.
He was born April 10, 1918, in Marietta, Ohio, a son of the late Jack and Mary Ethel (O'Mealey) Nelson. He was a U.S. Navy Veteran, 1st Class Boatswain Mate. He served for 30 years from 1939-1969. He served aboard the U.S.S. Gainard 706 Destroyer WWII, U.S.S. New York and the U.S.S. McNair during the Korean Conflict. He was then stationed portside in Norfolk, Va., where he retired. He also retired from B.F. Goodrich in Marietta, Ohio. He was a member of St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church. He enjoyed listening and playing classical guitar music.
He is survived by a daughter, Debra Anne Nelson of Parkersburg; son, Eric Michael Nelson of Parkersburg; daughter, Lisa Maureen Smith (Ed) of Washington, W.Va.; and a son, Allen Matthew Nelson (Ashley) of Ripley; grandchildren, Joshua Smith, Ashley Holpp, Shaun Smith, Samantha Nelson, Brian Nelson and Asher Nelson; great-grandchildren, Kendall Smith, Charlee Smith and Jackson Holpp; brother, Francis Nelson; and sisters, Rita Bailey and Evelyn Barnes. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Alma Margaret Nelson; son, Gregory Scott Nelson; two brothers; and a sister.
Services will be 11 a.m. Thursday at the Leavitt Funeral Home Parkersburg, with Deacon Doug Deem officiating. Visitation will be Wednesday from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. Inturment will be at the Mt. Carmel Catholic Cemetery, with military honors by American Legion Post 15.
