Pauline Virginia Hands, 91, of St. Marys passed away May 7, 2013, at the Camden Clark Medical Center, Memorial Campus, in Parkersburg.
She was born, Dec. 4, 1921, in Pleasants County, a daughter of the late Clarence Wells and Rella Kester Underwood. She attended the First Baptist Church of St. Marys. She was a 1939 graduate of St. Marys High School and a graduate of Alderson-Broaddus College. She taught school for 49 years. She taught eight years in the Pleasants County Schools. Three years were in one-room schools and five years she taught third grade at the St. Marys Elementary School under the name of Pauline Reeves. She continued to teach third grade in Michigan where she retired.
She is survived by a niece, Peggy Malone of St. Marys; three great nieces, Emily Glover, who helped with Pauline's care, and Tina and Karla Underwood. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Russell Hands; one sister, Naomi Gorrell, and four brothers, Calvin Coolidge Underwood, Clarence Laird Underwood, James Sterling Underwood and John Edward Underwood; a niece, Patricia Underwood; and two nephews, James Underwood and Paul Underwood.
Services will be held 1 p.m. Friday at the Ingram Funeral Home, St. Marys, with Pastor John Strimer officiating. Interment will be in the St. Marys IOOF Cemetery, Park Section. Friends may call from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday and from noon to 1 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. An online guest register is available at www.ingramfh.com.
