PARKERSBURG - Board of Education members hoping to start on the demolition portion of the Stadium Field bleachers project will meet tonight to consider approval of a bid.
Board members are expected to approve the nearly $217,000 demolition contract to Mondo Building and Excavation of Marietta.
Ryan Taylor with Pickering Associates previously told board members the total project attracted 17 contractors bidding on three packages of the project. Five returned bids on the demolition project.
Officials were hoping total rehabilitation of the facility would be complete by May 31. A delay in approval has pushed back the start of demolition work. If the bid is approved today, Taylor said work should start mid-week.
During Tuesday's meeting a local union official addressed the board during the public comment period, advising officials to consider the use of local, union labor. Board members Tim Yeater and Jim Fox both agreed. The two stated local workers often lend a hand in the volunteer work done on the stadium projects.
Taylor said he's had no dog in the fight.
"I am unbiased," he said. "I have to take the low bidder."
Taylor noted the packages were advertised in the paper and scrutinized.
"We made a recommendation of a contractor based on the county's procurement policy," he said. "If they want to modify the procurement policy, I am fine with that."
The board will convene at 6:30 p.m. The demolition contract is the only item on the agenda.
