Velma Clara Balis, 94, Ravenswood, W.Va., passed away April 5, 2013, at her home.
She was born Feb. 27, 1919, in Charleston, W.Va., a daughter of Aaron Livingston Ashcraft and Vera Blanche Davis Ashcraft. She was a homemaker. She was a lifelong resident of Silverton, W.Va. She was a member of the Silverton E.U.B. Church for most of her life, but recently attended the Faith Bible Church, and she loved baking bread and rolls, and lemon pie. She also loved spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren.
Surviving are daughters, Emelee Deming of Vienna, W.Va., and Olive Warner and her husband Guy of Ravenswood, W.Va.; sons, Earl Balis of Ravenswood, W.Va., and Donald Balis and wife Jean of Ravenswood, W.Va.; 16 grandchildren; 39 great-grandchildren; and eight great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Luther Balis; son-in-law, Devere Deming; daughter-in-law, Shirley Balis; two grandsons, Mark Balis and Rob Balis.
Services will be 1 p.m. Monday at Faith Bible Church of Ravenswood, W.Va., with Pastor Steve Raines to be assisted by Pastor Don Balis. Friends may visit the family 6-9 p.m. Sunday at Roush Funeral Home, Ravenswood, W.Va., and one hour prior to service at the church Monday. Burial will be in Ravenswood Cemetery.
