Bettie W. Sloan

Bettie Willard Sloan, 86, of Glenwood Retirement Community of Marietta, Ohio, formerly of Vienna, W.Va., passed away Sunday, March 24, 2013, at her residence.

She was born Feb. 24, 1927, in Winston-Salem, N.C., a daughter of the late Glenn N. and M. Louray Whicker Willard. Bettie was homemaker and worked a brief time as a secretary at Virginia Tech while her husband, Bill, was a student. Bettie enjoyed playing Bridge and was very accomplished at painting. She particularly enjoyed painting scenes from the historic districts of Marietta and Parkersburg. Bettie was financially astute and enjoyed playing the stock market. Bettie was a member of First Presbyterian Church, Parkersburg for many years. She was also a member of the Parkersburg Country Club and Parkersburg Art Center.

She is survived by her children, Mary Lee Gilmore and her husband William E. Jr. of Southern Pines, N.C., and William Henry Sloan III and his wife Charlene Ater of Broadlands, Va.; her grandchildren, Nathan Ater Sloan and wife Sara of Atlanta, Ga., and Reine Noel Gagliostro of Bedford, Mass.; her great-grandchildren, Harrison, Haley Jane and Landon Sloan and Alexandria and Hayden Gagliostro; and her sister, Ann Taylor Petty of Winston-Salem, N.C. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, William Henry Sloan Jr. in 2001; one sister; and two brothers.

In keeping with Bettie's wishes, there will be no public visitation or services. Following a private family service, Bettie's cremains will be inurned at First Presbyterian Church.

For those considering an expression of sympathy, memorials are preferred to First Presbyterian Church, 1341 Juliana Street, Parkersburg, WV 26101, or the charity of donor's choice.

Arrangements have been entrusted to the Vaughan Funeral Home and Crematory, 1010 Murdoch Avenue, Parkersburg, W.Va.
