Earl Wayland Surface

Earl Wayland Surface, 82, of Vienna, W.Va., passed away March 11, 2013, at the Camden Clark Medical Center, Memorial Campus, after a sudden illness.

He was born in Tariff, W.Va., in Roane County, the son of the late Fred F. and Freeda O. Burns Surface. He was a United States Marine Corps veteran, and retired from E.I. DuPont after 32 years of service. He was a member of the Vienna Masonic Lodge #172, and attended Vienna Baptist Church. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and camping with his family. He was fiercely devoted to his family and enjoyed spending time with them and attending his grandchildren's sporting events.

He is sadly missed by his wife of 55 years, Karolyn Ashley Surface of Vienna; children, Elizabeth K. 'Libby' Surface of Vienna, Frederick 'Fred' Surface and wife Laura of St. Clairsville, Ohio, and Linda McIntyre and husband Richard of West Wyoming, Pa.; grandchildren, Sarah, Christopher and Hannah Surface of St. Clairsville, Ohio; sisters, Frances Ball of Parkersburg, and Wanda Holland and husband Roland of Spencer, W.Va.; sister-in-law, Betty Surface of Sistersville, W.Va.; and many nephews, nieces and cousins. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Kenneth Surface and Denver 'Gene' Surface; and one sister, Rachael Armalene Surface.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Thursday at the Leavitt Funeral Home in Parkersburg, with Pastor Bill Brown officiating. Interment will be in the Riverview Cemetery in Williamstown. Visitation will be 3-5 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
