Coleman L. ‘Elmer’ Friend

Coleman L. 'Elmer' Friend, 81, of Belpre, Ohio, died Saturday, March 9, 2013, at his residence.

He was born in Strange Creek, W.Va., a son of the late Scott and Rose (Boggs) Friend. He retired from the B&O Railroad after 29 years, and was a veteran of the United States Army having served in Germany with the 101st Airborne Division. Elmer was a 40 year member of United Transportation Union, and a member of Mullen Memorial Baptist Church.

He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Sharon (Gumm) Friend; two sons, Gregory Friend of Papillion, Neb., and Jeffrey Friend (Alisa) of Boonesboro, Md.; four grandchildren, Cole, Taylor, Kyle and Ashton Friend; three sisters, Kathleen Gilliam of Carlyle, Ill., Bessie Bass (Troy) of Montgomery, W.Va., and Imogene Perrine of Newton Falls, Ohio. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Calvin Friend; and sister, Geraldine Stout.

Services will be 1 p.m. Wednesday at Leavitt Funeral Home, Belpre, with Rev. Kent Lowther officiating. Burial will be at Rockland Cemetery. Visitation will be 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. today.
