CARLISLE, Pa. -When your opponent shoots 57.7 percent from the field, including 55.6 percent from behind the 3-point arc, you are in trouble.
That's what happened to Marietta College here Saturday night in the opening round of the Division III Basketball Tournament. Host Dickinson jumped out to a 16-6 lead in the first four minutes of the game and never looked back in blitzing the Pioneer, 80-65. Dickinson (20-7) never trailed in the contest as Adam Honig connected on 12 of 15 field goal attempts, including five 3-pointers for a game high 32 points. Gary Wixted added 20 for Dickinson, which made 30 of its 52 attempts from the floor and 10 of its 18 3-pointers.
Marietta, which finished its season at 20-7. was led by J.J. Martin with 22 points while Jacob Owen added 15 and Garrett Stephenson 13. The Pioneers never seriously threatened, trailing at halftime 40-26 and never managed to cut its deficit in the final 20 minutes to less than 14 points.
In what seemed like an omen of things to come, Wixted drilled a 3-pointer for Dickinson just 17 seconds into the game and that set the tone for the remainder of the contest. The home team led 10-4 after two minutes, stretched its lead to double digits just 3:43 into the game and led by by no less than 11 during the remainder of the contest.
The loss brought an end to an outstanding season for Marietta, which captured the tournament championship of the Ohio Athletic Conference.
