PARKERSBURG - Parkersburg City Council will meet at 7:30 p.m. today in chambers to consider two resolutions and hold the final reading of a biking ordinance.
Mayor Bob Newell will present two ordinances to the council for consideration. The first will allow for a change in residency policy for the Parkersburg Fire Department, allowing firefighters to live within a 28-mile radius of the city building. The change will allow the department to recruit from Belpre and have firefighters living in that part of Ohio. The current policy requires firefighters to live within Wood County, which is within the 28-mile radius, but officials have argued response times from Belpre would actually be faster and the policy should not preclude people living there.
The second resolution authorizes the mayor to apply for a $140,000 JAG grant, which would be used to place three new Prevention Resource Officers at city middle schools. The grant also would pay for the two PROs already stationed in Parkersburg High and Parkersburg South High schools.
The council will hold a final reading on an ordinance allowing bicycles on the sidewalks along a stretch of Juliana Street. The ordinance passed first reading two weeks ago, despite opposition from some council members and members of the city's Bike Advisory Board.
Council also will hold a first reading on an ordinance creating a part-time police clerk position for the Parkersburg Police Department.
Prior to the start of Tuesday's meeting, two committee meetings will be held. The city's Public Works Committee meets at 6:15 p.m. in the Municipal Building's small conference room to consider two requests from Councilman John Kelly. The first is for a street dedication at Packard Square, and the second is to name the horseshoe courts at City Park "The Loman Tumlin Memorial Horseshoe Center."
At 7 p.m., the Urban Renewal Authority will meet in council chambers to consider a request by the Building Enforcement Agency to take possession of four properties. Those properties are 5 19th St., 527 33rd St., 316 Staunton Ave., and 820 Wood St.
