Betty Jane Richmond, 89, a lifelong resident of Parkersburg, passed away Feb. 22, 2013, at her home. She was surrounded by family and dear friends.
Betty was born in Parkersburg on Aug. 7, 1923, one of 14 children born to Benjamin F. Shively and Lula Hartleben Shively.
In addition to her parents, Betty was preceded in death by her husband, Richard N. Richmond; and by brothers, Carl, Howard, Bob, John, Jim, Jack and Ben; and sisters, Nora, Vera, Katherine, Ruth and Mary.
Betty graduated from Parkersburg High School and attended Mountain State Business College. She was a longtime employee of Dils Department Store, working in the millinery department for many years. Later in her life, she worked as the switchboard operator in the Parkersburg office of the West Virginia Department of Highways. Betty was a member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church for 66 years; she attended the church for over 70 years. She was very active in the church during those years in many capacities, but she most enjoyed being a member of the church choir.
Betty is survived by one sister, Margaret Davis and husband, Parker, of Henderson, Nevada. She is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews, all of whom she loved as if they were her own children. She was the kindest, most supportive and most generous aunt anyone could ever wish for.
Betty donated her body to the Human Gift Registry at West Virginia University to support teaching and research missions at WVU. A memorial service will be held at a later date.
The family suggests donations to the music program at St. Paul's United Methodist Church, 219 11th St, Parkersburg, WV 26101, or to Housecalls Hospice, 1226 Market St., Parkersburg, WV 26101.
