ELIZABETH - Wirt County Schools Superintendent Dan Metz was granted a one-year contract by board members last week.

Members of the Wirt County Board of Education approved a one-year contract for Metz, who has served as superintendent since 2004, at their Jan. 8 meeting.

Metz' contract, which included a slight raise, was approved with a 3-2 vote by board members. Metz was given a raise, from almost $89,000 to $91,357.

"What I asked for - as far as a raise - was the same as any employee in the Wirt County School System would have received; an upgrade based on years of service and level of education," Metz said.

"Yes, it is more money than the average employee, but it goes with the years of service."

Metz downplayed the close vote by the board and one-year contract. Metz said he had previously been approved by the board by a 4-1 vote.

"People vote what they feel is best," he said. "You do these jobs, not everybody loves you."

Metz said with one exception, he has always received a one-year deal. He will be eligible to retire in August.

"I am at the point in my career where I will take it year-by-year."
