PARKERSBURG - The Mid-Ohio Valley Chapter of the American Red Cross is holding a recruitment event on Saturday for people who would like to volunteer.
"This is for anyone who wants to volunteer with us in any way," said Shannon Taylor, volunteer coordinator with the chapter. "We will hold one of these events in all of our counties."
The program is expected to last an hour-and-a-half and will begin at 10 a.m. at the chapter's Eighth Street offices.
"This is a one-stop-shop for those wanting to volunteer with the Red Cross because it allows them to understand what s expected of our volunteers while they can also complete their application, background check and interview in that time," Taylor said.
It also allows those who attend to get the most up-to-date information on organizational changes and opportunities available to the volunteers.
"When a big disaster hits, we get floods of calls from people who want to help, but they can't because we have a process to be able to send volunteers out," Taylor said. "We are always grateful to get the calls, but volunteers need to be trained before they can work with us."
Those who attend this meeting will learn how the chapter volunteers work in many different areas of the Red Cross, including disasters, military, health and others.
More than 90 percent of all Red Cross functions are performed by volunteers, such as casework, training, building maintenance and administration.
To get interest, Taylor said she sent out flyers to area volunteer organizations and other agencies to get the word out.
"We just want anyone with questions about volunteering with us to come in," she added.
