PARKERSBURG - Host Parkersburg High scrapped itself back into the game in the fourth quarter, but Chaminade Julienne scored the last 11 points to post a 57-38 victory over the Big Reds on the final night of the Jack Stephens Memorial Holiday Tournament Saturday at Memorial Fieldhouse.
PHS, now 1-5, trailed the Eagles by 18 at 46-28 with only 4:48 to play before the Big Reds ran off 10 points in a row in a span of just 2:09 to close the gap down to eight at 46-38 at the 2:13 mark.
In the run, Ben Umpleby had four points. including the final two at the foul line. However, PHS didn't tally another point as Chaminade, now 4-4, responded with an 11-0 run of its own up to the final horn.
Two quick baskets at 1:30 and 1:21 by C.J. Riazzi and Kuentin Watson respectively upped the margin to 50-38 and seven straight free throws followed to finish off the Big Reds.
Chaminade's Justin Clark led all scorers in the game with 21 points, while Tim Riley netted 10 for the visitors
For PHS, Trevor Britton scored 10, Unmpleby nine and Levi Hays seven.
The Big Reds were behind just 13-10 after a quarter Saturday. But an 8-0 spurt to start the second stanza, begun and ended by treys by Clark and Austin Piatt, propelled the Eagles ahead 21-10 at the 5:54 mark and they were on top 28-19 at the half.
Then a 13-7 point advantage by Chaminade in the third quarter enabled the Eagles to soar out to 41-26 lead heading into the fourth quarter.
PHS next plays on Friday when the Big Reds travel to St. Albans to take on the Red Dragons in a 7:30 p.m. MSAC tilt.
