Buffalo nips Roane to win Wirt tournament

December 29, 2012
By JAY W. BENNETT (jbennett@newsandsentinel.com) , Parkersburg News and Sentinel

ELIZABETH - Basketball fans witnessed plenty of action for their money Friday night at the Wirt County Holiday Tournament as Buffalo nipped Roane County, 62-59, to win the championship and the host Tigers rallied past Williamstown, 70-67, to claim the consolation affair.

All-tournament members Laythen Good and Levi Jordan tallied 19 and 14 points, respectively, as Buffalo improved to 7-0 while the Raiders dropped to 5-2 with a home game scheduled for tonight versus Gilmer County.

Jacob Neal, who led all scorers with 24 points in the title game, took a skip pass from Raider all-tournament teammate Tyler Harper and canned a triple with 4:41 left in the game to give Roane County its first lead of the night, 46-44. However, Buffalo scored the next five points as Good hit his fifth and final trifecta and Bradley Harris got a putback.

Neal, though, then answered with another trey, a three-point play and Raider point guard Brad Richard got a steal and made two foul shots to turn the tide. After Neal was left open with 2:39 left and canned his last 3-pointer, Buffalo trailed 57-51.

The Bison, who travel next Friday to South Gallia, then scored 10 unanswered to take control down the stretch. Roane County had nine of its 27 turnovers in the fourth quarter and that included back-to-back steals and layups by Isaiah Robinson and Jordan, who grabbed 12 caroms, to cut the deficit to 57-56 with 1:39 left.

A Dylan Rich free throw, two Robinson foul shots and a 15-foot Jordan jumper accounted for the final five points of the run to make it 61-57 with 42 seconds remaining. Harper then converted a lay-in eight ticks later to cut the deficit to two. Roane County then got the ball back with a chance to take the lead, but the Raiders turned it over. Robinson, who finished with 16 points, then hit one foul shot with 6.4 left and Harper's 3-point attempt was off the mark to tie it.

Elijah Onwuka chipped in nine points, 11 boards and a pair of blocks in the setback.

Williamstown, which dropped to 3-3 and plays on Wednesday at Paden City, led 21-10 after one before the Tigers (2-5) clawed back to within 30-28 at halftime.

Despite opening up a 40-30 cushion early in the third, holding a 52-45 advantage after three and going ahead 64-61 with 1:41 to play after a Dakota Watson steal and lay-in, the 'Jackets couldn't hold on.

Kalob Bell, who hit six treys and scored on a variety of runners and tough shots, finished with a game-high 38 points while adding 12 rebounds, four assists, three steals and a block. Bell's trey from an Austin McVey assist with 1:21 to go tied the game and the orange and black took the lead for good 13 seconds later when Mark Cunningham got a steal and layup.

Watson's steal and layup with 21 seconds left cut the deficit to one, but McVey hit two more foul shots to set the final score. All-tournament member Josh DeBolt, who had 14 points and a game-high 22 rebounds, was about three steps away from halfcourt when he launched a desperation 3 just before the buzzer that banked off the glass, rattled inside the cylinder, but popped back out.

'Jacket freshman Landon Travis, making his first varsity start as WHS was without three of its top six players, had 20 points, 10 boards, four assists and as many steals. Hunter Neely had 17 points in the setback and Watson tallied 10. Tiger Jeremy Kerby chipped in eight points, 12 caroms, four steals and a trio of blocks.

Wirt County, which placed Bell on the all-tournament team and snapped a five-game slide, welcomes Parkersburg Catholic to town on Friday.

Frontier allowed the cold Wildcats to stay in the game early on as the Cougars committed 17 of their 25 turnovers in the opening half.

Valley 64, Paden City 57

PINE GROVE, Ohio -Free throws - or the lack of made free throws - proved to be Paden City's downfall in a 64-57 loss at Valley (Wetzel) on Friday night.

Zach Heasley led Paden City (5-1) with 16 points, while Luke Cooper and Drew Bidwell both finished with 12 points. Teammate Kennedy Cain's double-double topped out at 10 points and 13 rebounds.
