Robert W. Ratcliffe, 73, of Parkersburg W.Va., died Dec. 7, 2012, at Parkersburg Care and Rehabilitation Center, after a battle with cancer.
Bob was born in Philadelphia, Pa., May 23, 1939, the only son of Herbert Lee Ratcliffe and Louise Hollingsworth Kopp Ratcliffe. He graduated from Lower Merion High School, and then went on to earn his undergraduate degree in chemistry from Dennison University in 1961. Following college, Bob enlisted with the United States Navy for four years, serving as radioman second class. After his discharge from the military, Bob worked as a chemist, photographer, printer and draftsman. He was a long-time, faithful member of Christian Life Center in Parkersburg, where he was involved in several ministries.
Bob became a certified teacher in the "Life in Focus Education" program. From 2005 to 2011, he drove weekly to the WV North Central Regional Jail helping countless men learn how to break free from addiction and to develop a positive lifestyle. This teaching experience inspired Bob to become a public school teacher. He served as a substitute teacher in the Mid-Ohio Valley for the past few years.
A life-long bachelor, Bob Ratcliffe is survived by a sister and brother-in-law, Ellin and John Leggett of Washington, Pa.; a niece and nephew; as well as six grand-nephews and nieces. Bob was preceded in death by his parents and a nephew.
Friends will be received 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 5, for a memorial service at Christian Life Center, 3211 Sixth Avenue, Parkersburg, with Pastor Keith Mendenhall officiating.
Memorial gifts may be made to the church.
