PARKERSBURG - Top-ranked Class AAA Huntington won both of its matches here Saturday inside Memorial Fieldhouse while host Parkersburg went 1-1 on the wrestling mats.

The No. 5 Big Reds of head coach Chris Way rolled Wheeling Park, 54-9, in the opener and fell 43-24 to the Highlanders. HHS dispatched the sixth-ranked Patriots, 50-14, in the other match.

Fans who came to the triangular were hoping to see a battle between Parkersburg's Jared Haught, a two-time state champion, and Wheeling Park's Cody Amos, a two-time state runner-up.

Parkersburg’s Jared Haught works on getting Huntington’s Devin Dempsey into a pinning position in their 182-pound match on Saturday. Haught got the mat slapper with two seconds left in the opening period.

Those wishing for that got what they wanted when Haught bumped up from 182 to take on the 195-pound Amos. Haught recorded a takedown just 48 seconds into a match he had control of throughout and emerged with a 7-5 victory. He led 4-1 after a reversal with 50 seconds left in the middle period and escaped after allowing an Amos reversal to hold a 5-3 cushion after two. Although Amos made it 5-4 on an escape in the third, Haught got one more takedown in his victory.

The Virginia Tech-bound Haught pinned Huntington's Devin Dempsey with two seconds left in the first period of their 182-pound match. The only other Big Reds to register two wins apiece were 120-pounder Nick Johnson, Adam Lindamood and Tyler Riddle. Johnson had a forfeit and pinned Josh Haddox of HHS in 3:07. Lindamood beat Patriot Geremy Paige 5-3 at 220 and needed two overtimes to fend off Highlander Aerison Parrish in their 195-pound match. Riddle got a first period mat slapper versus Wheeling Park heavyweight R.J. Saunders and pinned Huntington 220-pounder Jacob Blackburn in 42 seconds.

Riddle's pin was the second quickest of the match and six ticks faster than the one Amos had on Parrish. Huntington's Billy Waldeck had the quickest pin, needing only 29 seconds to stick Wheeling Park's Matt Powell. Big Red Skyler Terrell lost 2-0 to Waldeck in their 138-pound match.

Huntington, which got 2-0 efforts from Logan Grass, Jordan Allen, Chase Childers, Cody Shepherd, Waldeck, Justin Arthur, Paden Christian and heavyweight Nigale Cabell, had several close matches versus the Big Reds. Aside from Waldeck's triumph, Childers beat Jason West 9-6 at 126 and Shepherd edged Sam Phillips 3-2 at 132.

The only Wheeling Park grappler to collect two wins was 170-pounder Josh Dent, who nipped Big Red Dylan Richards via a 3-2 decision and then scored a 21-5 technical fall against Highlander Austin Budd.

Both Huntington and Wheeling Park were without multiple regulars while Big Red Trapper Hays was still nursing an injury as well.

Parkersburg's Mo Talafhah had the comeback of the day in his 145-pound match against Wheeling Park's Alex McGlumphy. The Patriot had things going his way with an 8-1 advantage, but Talafhah turned the tide and won by pin in 3:35.

The Big Reds return to action on Friday when the red and white head to the Wheeling Park duals.
